Rare Pokémon card worth $55,000 as toy expert urges fans to check their collections now

Pokémon cards have become collector’s items, with some valuing in the millions of dollars. Some fans of the franchise have gotten lucky, finding vintage cards in thrift stores that end up being worth nearly $10,000.
If you’re a collector, that could be you.
There’s one type of Pokémon card worth thousands of dollars, and toy experts are urging fans to check their stash.

It’s the 2000 Pokémon Neo Genesis 1st Edition Holo Lugia #The 9 card, released by gaming company Wizards of the Coast. According to MoneyMade, the card has become one of the most coveted cards among Pokémon fans.
The average price of a card ranges from $450 to $2,412, but the highest it’s ever sold was $55,000.
Prices fluctuate depending on the card’s condition. The Professional Sports Authenticator (PSA) can give a card a score depending on the integrity of the centering, corners, edges and surface of the card.

A PSA10 rating is a virtually perfect card.
As of the summer, MoneyMade said there were 3,667 Lugia cards rated across different PSA grades.
Even the lowest grade 1st Edition Holo Lugia card sold for $122, while a PSA10 rated version sold for over $45,000. The card is no longer sold by Wizards of the Coast.
